RE 17 FEB 25
With reference to your letter of the 17th December (to
which it is regretted that you have not received an earlier
reply), transmitting copies of a telegram and despatch from the Governor of Hong Kong, relative to the interim report
07/24
Jestem
of the Wireless Sub-Committee of the Imperial Communications
Committee, I am directed by the Postmaster General to
observe that the report by Mr.King (which forms an enclosure to the despatch), recommending that the Oap d'Aguilar
Station should be retained, appears to have been based upon
a misapprehension as to the precise scope of the Admiralty
proposals for adapting the Stonecutters Station for
"diplex-duplex" working.
As explained in the note to paragraph 5 of the interim report referred to (1.0.0. Paper No.780), the adoption of the "diplex-duplex system would enable Stonecutters not
only to work with ships on the commercial spark wave, but
at the same time to maintain, alternatively, (i) a duplex
service on continuous wave with adjacent point-to-point
stations, or (ii) a simplex service on continuous wave with
ships. The advantages of this system are elaborated in
paragraph 11 of the joint memorandum by the Admiralty,
|Colonial Office and Post Office, circulated as 1.0.0. Paper
W.T. Sub No.202. In particular its adoption enables a
combined point-to-point and ship-and-shore station to
handle a greater volume of traffic than two independent
